Is it urgent? Acute presentations in general practice and how to manage them


This ALM is a series of 6 one hour workshops looking at acute presentations in general practice and how to manage them. Featuring topics in:


  • Cardiology – ECGs, arrhythmias, sudden death
  • Ophthalmology – eye emergencies, painful red eye, foreign bodies, sudden loss of vision
  • Mental health – suicide, delirium, anorexia nervosa
  • Paediatrics – the febrile child Emergency presentations

Each workshop will include case based discussions and group work with predisposing and reinforcing activities to be completed online.


Learning Outcomes:

  • Implement a systems approach to reading ECGs
  • Diagnose dangerous arrhythmias
  • Identify patients with chest pain that need urgent transfer to ED
  • Recognise acute eye conditions that require urgent referral Identify and manage common paediatric emergencies
  • Develop a GP care path for supporting people at risk of suicide
