Emerging STIs and a new era in cervical screening: Top tips and tools for GPs

GPs play a critical role in the early detection and prevention of sexually transmissible infections (Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoea and Mycoplasma genitalium infections) and educating patients about the benefits of participation in screening and vaccination.  This ALM will address three cervical screening challenges for GPs under new national guidelines:

  • what test to order-applying the co-test and management of symptomatic women
  • how to implement the alternative self-collection pathway, and
  • how to support women transitioning to the new program.

Optimal collection and handling of a range of specimens will be demonstrated. A comprehensive introduction to Australia’s new 9-valent HPV vaccine will also be included.
